Step into the fascinating world of Laura Esquivel's award winning novel, Like Water for Chocolate, where food, love, family and magic come together in one unforgettable story. Four monthly sessions exploring the theme and food from this amazing novel set during the revolution time in Mexico. 

Each session will celebrate the beautiful connection between food, family and emotions. Together, we'll dive into this fantastic novel while cooking a recipe inspired by the flavours, traditions and recipes woven throughout the pages of the book; we'll talk about the moments that made us laugh, cry and reflect, discovering how a meal can carry memories, emotions and love from one generation to the next.

Whether you're a fan of the book already or are reading it for the first time, this event offers a warm and welcoming space to connect with fellow readers, enjoy great food, and experience the story and its food in a whole new way.

Your ticket includes:

  • A paperback copy of the book (sent to you by post)
  • A seat at each of the 4 Page to Plate sessions (one in October, one in November, one in December and the last one in January, see the end of the description for exact dates).
  • A welcome drink inspired by the drinks in the book
  • A guided book discussion of Like Water for Chocolate
  • A demonstration of one of the recipes from the chapters of the book
  • A meal inspired by the chapters of the book read that month
  • Discussion prompts and conversation led by the host
  • A relaxed, intimate atmosphere with fellow book lovers
  • A seat at a very special last session where a full feast inspired by the food and historical times of the novel will be served.

Sessions will be hosted on the following dates:

6th of October, 2026  - 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm

3rd of November, 2026 - 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm

1st of December, 2026 - 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm

6th of January, 2027 - 6:30 pm - 10:30 pm

Each session will cover three chapters of the book, so please read them before attending to get the most from the discussion and the cooking demonstration. The menu may contain common allergens—dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice.

The tickets are non-refundable but you can transferred to someone else. Each session is unique and will be a once off event. 

Synopsis of the book:  

Set in Mexico during the times of the Mexican Revolution (1910-1917), the novel follows Tita, the youngest of three sisters and daughter of a strict family. Bound by tradition, she cannot marry the love of her life, Pedro. He marries Tita's sister instead to stay close. Trapped at home by her tyrannical mother, Tita uses cooking as her sole outlet, magically infusing her meals with deep emotions that affect everyone who eats them. 

Through twelve chapters, each marked as a "monthly installment" and thus labeled with the months of the year, we learn of Tita's struggle to pursue true love and claim her independence. Each installment features a recipe to begin each chapter. The structure of Like Water For Chocolate is wholly dependent on these recipes, as the main episodes of each chapter generally involve the preparation or consumption of the dishes that these recipes yield. The details of additional secondary recipes are woven throughout the narrative.

We keep our classes and events small and reasonably priced, and while we know life happens, we do have a cancellation policy. We will always try to help wherever possible, but please take a moment to familiarise yourself with our cancellation terms below.

You'll get a full refund if you cancel at least four weeks before the class or event. If you cancel between two and three weeks before the class, you'll be entitled to a 50% refund of the class or event fee. If you cancel within one week of the class or evet, we have sadly already planned and bought all the ingredients with your attendance in mind, so no refund will be provided.

However, if you cancel late, we’ll do our best to resell your seat. If we manage to fill it, we’ll happily refund your ticket. You’re also welcome to transfer your seat to someone else—just let us know in advance so we can accommodate any dietary restrictions!

Please note that not showing up to a class or event, for any reason, does not entitle you to a refund or a deferral to another class or event. We are unable to offer alternative dates for missed classes or events.

If your class or event was booked as a gift, the same terms and conditions apply.

If you need to defer your booking to a later date, it must be done within 12 months of your original class or event date. If the new class or event has a higher price, you’ll just need to cover the difference.

Picado Mexican Kitchen handles wheat/gluten, sesame seeds, and nuts on a regular basis, so bear that in mind when booking.
